Quaint and quiet archipelagos where I could live with my friends and family. On one hand, I like making somewhat realistic fishing villages. I alternate between two styles, depending on my mood. Trees, stairs, birds, benches, even little beehives appear as your island grows. Enclose a flat area, and morphs into a yard or park. Delete a section over water, and it becomes an arch or a bridge. Go vertical, and the roof changes into something that might be a lighthouse. Keep going like that and now it looks like something that might be a warehouse or factory. Put two houses of the same color next to each other, they'll combine into a single, bigger house. The game generates buildings and much more based on the context of what's around it. Remove the original platform, and you have a house that's like someone took a home from a magical sea-side village and plopped it down on top of the Maunsell Sea Forts.Īt least you won't have to worry about waves.įrom here, the possibilities are surprisingly endless. Now you have a house on stilts on a platform in the middle of the sea. You can right-click, as in remove, the ground floor. might need some neighbors.Ĭlick on the roof, and now you have a two-story house! Three clicks for three, or as many as you want. Click on top of this, and you get a little house! It has tiny windows, a little door, even a mailbox.Ī house! Hmmm. This platform looks to be made of stone blocks, with a little railing. I do mean pop the audio effects of the game are one of its many charms. That first click pops a platform into existence in the endless sea. The start of your island, islands, cities, whatever you want.

Your only choices are ones of color: red to purple, plus some stone-like earth tones and a soft white. Once you load in, you're greeted by a greenish-blue expanse that disappears to a horizon populated by some friendly looking clouds.

It's an interactive distraction in the best possible sense. If your idea of a video game involves a story, puzzles, exploration, lots of pew pew, etc, this isn't it. It's a tiny planet creator, but doesn't quite have the same creative opportunities as this new game.Īnd I suppose "game" is a bit misleading. If you're reading this story on a beefy enough computer, check out the web-based Planet, which has a similar vibe to Townscaper. He has an impressive track record making little gorgeous diversions like this. Townscaper is the work of a single developer, Oskar Stålberg. But if the photos don't sell you on it, here's a bit more.

It's $6 on Steam and you should buy it right now. Oh, and you do this all with a single click to build up, a handful of colors, and a brilliance of design that bigger games could only dream of having. You're transported to a world that you create, from a tiny island fishing village, to a pseudo-steampunk, multi-layered city that couldn't exist anywhere but sci-fi. It's an outlet for creativity, and at the same time, evokes a longing for a place that doesn't really exist.

It's a relaxing, adorable escape from the real world. But overall well worth the price, I thoroughly recommend you buying it.Townscaper is everything I need right now. I’d love a couple of export functions say to a 3D model and and built-in camera function so we do screenshots as well.

Watching how he made the assets I wonder if CityEngine could actually help produce those (I’m thinking how I could code for those assets)…. If you’re interested in the technical details he did a presentation on it, below. I might share code here shortly so you can load my creations. I like that you can share the ‘code’ (or is it a seed value like you have on minecraft?) so others can use your work. It is a work in progress and I’m sure he will add a few bits more to this. I love the seagulls that flutter around and how the buildings pop in to place.

I’ve played it a love it, cute noises as you build and you can create little settlements as you go. Well he’s now released the ‘game’ if you can call it that as it is purely a creation tool with no goal in mind which is fine by me because I am quite bad at games 🙂 It caught my eye as ‘procedural’ generation was mentioned and anyone who reads this blog knows my favourite procedural modeller is ArcGIS CityEngine, so you know I had to see this. A while back something caught my eye on twitter and it was a positive thing! The user seemed to be creating a simple game that allowed the user to create cute townscapes.
